Notes from Prof. Alan Sroufe’s conference “NO MAGICAL EXPLANATION”

Firstly, I have to say that it was really great conference… Rrof. Alan told all his notes properly and answered audience’s questions with patient. He explained his ideas regarding issue giving nice examples. I am just really sorry to forget my sweet D90 at home. I couldn’t take any photo from the conference…  Next conference I am going to bring it and took some photos to share it on my blog. If my Darling hears this, he is going to kill me J =)

In the beginning of the conference, Prof. Diana started to the conference with introducing Prof. Alan’s life, works, and so on… Mainly, He wrote 7 books and he was a professor institution of child development, University of Minnesota. Diana said he is retired now. After giving a little information about him, Prof. Alan started his saying two words that are “merci beaucoup” and “merhaba” J He mentioned regarding about his journey of Istanbul. He said that Istanbul is fantastic and amazing city. He seemed satisfied by journey of Istanbul.
Actually, I am not going to give a new conference you now J just write and share some notes from the conference. Everybody who would like to read those notes can share it with somebody…
One of his arguments was about child’s reactions to the events. He says we have 5 possible explanations for different reactions.
1. Gender
2. Temperament
3. Cognitive deficits
4. Brain dysfunction
5. Experiential History

Mainly he says two different children have two different reactions to the same event according to these possible explanations. They are quite important explanations. Early experiences of child have a special importance. Entire history of the person and circumstances has a great influence on behavior. Our behavior shapes based on past experiences. We can predict our future behavior in terms of past experiences. Major life events are significant for people such as getting marry, having children and so on…
After that he mentioned a bit about attachment issue in infants. I have noted that quality of attachment depends on earlier quality of care. There are 5 attachment relationships as you see below:

The attachment relationship
1.                  Relationship between infant and caregiver
2.                  All infants become attached
3.                  Differences in attachment qualities
4.                  Based in patterning of care
5.                  The organization of attachment behavior

Well, we can ask this question ourselves. How attachment supports development? There 5 ways again…
1.                  The motivational base
2.                  The attitudinal base
3.                  The instrumental base
4.                  The emotional base
5.                  The relational base

We finish up the conference with student’s great questions. I couldn’t take note them, I enjoyed with listening questions and answers… I have just remember that Prof. Alan gave this answer for questions, There is no magical explanation for all questions hehe J)))))

Huge thanks Prof. Alan Sroufe for coming to Bilgi University… J

5th Week's Notes

Hello everyone! In last week, as you know we had covered Heredity and Conception. So in this week we are going to look at Chapter 3; prenatal development. We have mentioned just 2 stages which are Germinal and Embryonic stages. The germinal stage is the period of development between conception and the implantation the embryo. (First 2 weeks)

Zygot     Blastocyst    Embryo

We had questioned the stem cell. What are the pros and cons of stem cell? Actually I have searched it and found some useful information about it.

Second stage was Embryonic Stage. (Between 3-8weeks) This is really really really critical period for our baby!!! J Because embryonic stage begins with implantation and covers the first 2 months during which the major organ systems differentiate. Brain of our baby, his/her teeth buds and nerves begins to develop. Bones cells appear. Shape of the PLACENTA is similar to the ISLAK HAMBURGER as Ryan said in the lecture. J J J

Finally, I just would like to remind you human embryos and fetuses at various stages of development.

How they are ugly :DDD
Have nice weekend to all of you… ;)

4th Week Notes

In this week, Ryan had covered Heredity and Conception.  Then I will show you Female/Male Reproductive system after telling heredity’s notes. During the lecture Ryan said that you should memorize F/M reproductive system. So again it is most probably going to be in the midterm exam J
This chapter consists of a little terminological word which is about our biology. I am not going to describe all the words, I will show some photos of them to memorize easily for visual people J
I begin with description of heredity which means the transmission of traits and characteristics from parent to child by means of genes. Heredity involved in psychological traits, including psychological disorders. Genes are basic units of heredity. And chromosomes involved genetic information within the nuclei of cells. Actually we also should know zygote. It is a fertilized egg. It is a kind of cell that divides again and again. As we know there are two types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis.

Well, What I would like to mention is Down syndrome. If you want to read more about Down syndrome look this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_syndrome

Now, I am going to show you some photos of Female and Male reproductive system. I hope these tables and photos help you to memorize all terminological words easily. Ryan said you just should know their area by their names and of course by their function!!! J

If you want to know their function just look and see on this link:   http://www.besthealth.com/besthealth/bodyguide/reftext/html/repr_sys_fin.html

Second and Third Week Notes

In the first and second week, Ryan has touched on some topics which are theories of child development, perspectives on child development and controversies in child development. I am going to explain these issues and share my opinions, experiences on the topics. Actually, first week I have some confusing about concept of this lecture but now I get used to understand and analysis the lecture easily. Finally, I started to write and share something about this lecture.

We got a table which summarizes all the theories and controversies in child development. Now, I will say a significant clue about the midterm exam J I think this table will be in the midterm exam! So, I just remind you what was about… the table is just below

Look and try to memorize the table in your mind…
